Braces for kids: the short answer
Every child should have an orthodontic check by the age of 7. Most children who need braces start them between about 10 and 14, when most permanent teeth have come through, and treatment usually takes 12 to 24 months. At Dr. Gowds Dental Hospitals, braces for children cost the same as for adults: from approx. Rs. 25,000 (depends on case) for metal braces.
| Type of braces | Suits children who | Approx. cost in Hyderabad |
|---|---|---|
| Metal braces | need the most affordable, most predictable option | Approx. Rs. 25,000 – Rs. 45,000 (depends on case) |
| Ceramic braces | want tooth-coloured, less visible brackets | Approx. Rs. 40,000 – Rs. 70,000 (depends on case) |
| Self-ligating braces | need fixed braces with fewer adjustments | Approx. Rs. 60,000 – Rs. 90,000 (depends on case) |
| Clear aligners (teens) | are older teens who will wear aligners 20–22 hours a day | Approx. Rs. 80,000 – Rs. 1,50,000 (depends on case) |
Costs are from our teeth braces cost guide. Your child’s exact plan and cost are confirmed after an examination and X-rays.
Book an orthodontic check for your child
Parents in Hyderabad often ask the same three questions: is my child old enough for braces, which type is right, and how much will it cost? This guide answers each one, explains the signs that a child may need treatment, and describes what happens at the first visit with our orthodontist.

What is the right age for braces?
There is no single right age, but timing matters. A first orthodontic check by age 7 lets the orthodontist spot bite and jaw problems early, and most children who need full braces start between about 10 and 14.
- By age 7: first orthodontic check. The first permanent molars and front teeth have usually come through, so problems with the bite and jaw growth can be seen early. Most children only need monitoring at this stage.
- About 7 to 10: early treatment, only if needed. Some problems are easier to correct while the jaws are still growing, such as a crossbite, a very narrow upper jaw or front teeth that stick out and are at risk of injury.
- About 10 to 14: full braces. Most baby teeth have been replaced by permanent teeth, so the orthodontist can straighten all of them in one course of treatment.
- After braces: retainers. Teeth can drift back, so every child finishes with a retainer.
Our pediatric dentistry team checks bite development at routine visits and refers your child to the orthodontist when needed.
Signs your child may need braces
Crowded, gapped or protruding teeth are the most common signs, but some bite problems are harder for parents to see.
- Crowded or overlapping teeth, or permanent teeth coming in behind baby teeth
- Large gaps between teeth
- Upper front teeth that stick out well beyond the lower teeth
- Lower teeth that close in front of the upper teeth, or teeth that do not meet at all at the front
- A jaw that shifts to one side when your child bites
- Baby teeth lost much earlier or later than usual
- A thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting habit that continues after about age 6
- Mouth breathing, or difficulty biting and chewing
None of these means braces are certain. They mean an orthodontic check is worth booking.
Early treatment or full braces: what is the difference?
Early (interceptive) treatment guides jaw growth and makes room for teeth in younger children; full braces straighten the permanent teeth later. Many children only ever need full braces.
| Early treatment | Full braces | |
|---|---|---|
| Usual age | About 7 to 10 | About 10 to 14 and beyond |
| Aim | Guide jaw growth, correct a crossbite, make space, stop harmful habits | Straighten all permanent teeth and correct the bite |
| Typical appliances | Expanders, removable or functional appliances, habit breakers | Metal, ceramic or self-ligating braces, or aligners for older teens |
| Who needs it | Only some children, after an orthodontic check | Most children who need orthodontic treatment |
Types of braces for children
Metal braces remain the most common choice for children because they are strong, predictable and the most affordable. Ceramic and self-ligating braces suit some children, and clear aligners suit responsible older teens.
- Metal braces: the most affordable and dependable option for every kind of bite problem. Children can choose coloured elastic ties.
- Ceramic braces: tooth-coloured brackets that are less visible in school photos; they need slightly more care with food.
- Self-ligating braces: brackets that hold the wire with a built-in clip, which can mean fewer adjustments.
- Clear aligners: removable and nearly invisible, but they only work if they are worn 20 to 22 hours a day, so they suit older, motivated teens. Compare the options in our Invisalign or braces guide.
How much do braces cost for kids in Hyderabad?
At Dr. Gowds Dental Hospitals, braces for children cost approx. Rs. 25,000 – Rs. 45,000 (depends on case) for metal braces and approx. Rs. 40,000 – Rs. 70,000 (depends on case) for ceramic braces. The cost depends on the type of braces, how complex the bite is and how long treatment takes.
- Type of braces: metal is the most affordable; self-ligating braces and aligners cost more.
- Complexity: mild crowding costs less than a deep bite or severe crowding.
- Early treatment: if an expander or other appliance is needed first, it is planned and priced separately.
- Retainers: ask which retainer is included in the plan.
Your child’s exact cost is written into the treatment plan before anything starts. For adult and teen prices by type, see our complete braces price guide.
What happens at your child’s first orthodontic visit?
The first visit is a check, not treatment. It ends with a clear answer: no treatment needed yet, monitoring, early treatment or full braces.
- Examination of the teeth, bite, jaws and habits.
- X-rays and records: an OPG X-ray, photographs and, where needed, a 3D scan.
- A clear recommendation, explained to both you and your child.
- A written plan with the type of braces, expected duration, visit schedule and approx. cost, if treatment is advised.
Helping your child live with braces
Most children adjust within a week or two. A few simple habits protect the braces and the teeth underneath.
- Brush after meals with an orthodontic brush and use an interdental brush around brackets.
- Avoid hard and sticky foods: whole nuts, hard sweets, chewing gum, corn on the cob and sticky toffees.
- Wear a mouthguard for contact sports and cricket.
- Keep orthodontic wax handy for the first few days in case a bracket rubs.
- Keep every adjustment appointment, usually every 4 to 6 weeks.
How Dr. Gowds Dental Hospitals plans braces for children

Frequently asked questions
Does my child need braces at age 7?
Usually not. Age 7 is the right time for a first orthodontic check, not for braces. Most children only need monitoring. A few need early treatment for a crossbite, a narrow jaw or protruding front teeth, and most who need braces start them between about 10 and 14.
Can a child get braces before all the baby teeth fall out?
Sometimes. Early treatment with an expander or another appliance can start while baby teeth are still present. Full braces usually wait until most permanent teeth have come through, so that all of them can be aligned in one course of treatment.
Are braces painful for kids?
Braces do not hurt when they are fitted. Most children feel pressure and mild soreness for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment. Soft foods help, and orthodontic wax stops brackets rubbing the cheeks while they get used to them.
How long do children wear braces?
Most children wear full braces for about 12 to 24 months, depending on how much the teeth need to move. Early treatment, when needed, is a separate shorter phase. After braces, a retainer keeps the teeth in their new position.
Are braces cheaper for children than for adults?
The braces themselves cost the same: approx. Rs. 25,000 – Rs. 45,000 (depends on case) for metal braces at Dr. Gowds Dental Hospitals. Treatment can be simpler in children because the jaws are still growing, which sometimes shortens it.
Which is better for a child, metal or ceramic braces?
Metal braces are strong, predictable and the most affordable, so they suit most children. Ceramic braces are less visible but slightly more delicate and cost more. Your orthodontist will suggest the option that suits your child’s bite and routine.
Can teenagers get Invisalign or clear aligners?
Yes, older teens with suitable teeth can have clear aligners. They must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day and removed only to eat and brush, so they suit motivated teens. Younger children usually do better with fixed braces.
Can my child play sports or a musical instrument with braces?
Yes. A mouthguard protects the teeth and braces during contact sports and cricket. Children who play wind instruments need a short time to adjust, and orthodontic wax can make it more comfortable.
What foods should my child avoid with braces?
Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods that can break brackets or bend wires: whole nuts, hard sweets, chewing gum, toffees, ice and corn on the cob. Cut fruit such as apples into small pieces.
Will my child need a retainer after braces?
Yes. Every child finishes braces with a retainer, because teeth tend to drift back. Your orthodontist explains how long and how often to wear it, and what to do if it is lost or broken.
