Types of braces: the short answer
The four main types of braces are metal, ceramic, self-ligating and lingual. Metal braces are the most visible but very reliable; ceramic braces are tooth-coloured and less noticeable; self-ligating braces use a built-in clip instead of elastic ties; lingual braces sit behind the teeth and can’t be seen from the front.
| Type | How it looks | How it holds the wire | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal | Silver brackets, visible | Small elastic ties | Strong and reliable for all cases |
| Ceramic | Tooth-coloured, less visible | Elastic or tooth-coloured ties | Ties can pick up stains |
| Self-ligating | Metal or ceramic | Built-in sliding clip | No elastic ties to change |
| Lingual | Hidden behind the teeth | Ties or clips | Takes time to get used to for speech and tongue |
All braces move teeth with brackets and a wire; they differ in how visible they are, how they hold the wire and how easy they are to keep clean. This guide explains each type so you can discuss the right one with your orthodontist. For prices, see our braces price guide for Hyderabad.
What are metal braces?
Metal braces are stainless-steel brackets bonded to the front of the teeth and joined by a wire held with small elastic ties. They are the traditional option and work for simple and complex cases alike. Many children and teenagers choose coloured ties to make them fun; see our guide to braces for kids.
What are ceramic braces?
Ceramic braces work like metal braces but use clear or tooth-coloured brackets, so they blend in with the teeth. They are popular with adults and working professionals. The brackets are slightly larger than metal ones, and clear ties can stain with tea, coffee or turmeric, so ties are changed at regular visits.
What are self-ligating braces?
Self-ligating braces have a small built-in door or clip that holds the wire, so no elastic ties are needed. They come in metal and ceramic versions. With fewer ties, there are fewer places for food to collect, and adjustments can be quicker. Whether they suit you depends on the tooth movement your case needs.
What are lingual braces?
Lingual braces are fixed to the inside surfaces of the teeth, so they are hidden from view when you smile. Because they sit near the tongue, speech and comfort take longer to adjust to, and cleaning needs more care. Not every bite is suitable, so your orthodontist will tell you if they are an option.
Metal vs ceramic braces: which should you choose?
Choose metal if strength, durability and budget matter most; choose ceramic if appearance matters most. Both give the same result when planned well. Ceramic brackets are tougher on opposing teeth in some bites, so your orthodontist may suggest metal on the lower teeth and ceramic on the upper.
Are clear aligners a type of braces?
Clear aligners are not braces, but they are the main alternative. They are removable trays rather than brackets and wires. Read Invisalign vs braces for adults to compare them.
What about “6-month braces”?
Short-term braces usually aim to straighten only the front teeth for appearance. They may suit mild crowding, but they do not correct the bite. Your orthodontist will tell you honestly whether a short course is enough or a full treatment is needed.
How does the orthodontist decide which type suits me?
The choice depends on the type of tooth movement needed, your bite, how visible you mind the braces being, how easily you can keep them clean, and your budget. Your orthodontist examines your teeth, takes scans and X-rays, then explains the options that fit your case.

Frequently asked questions
Which type of braces is the best?
No single type is best for everyone. Metal braces are the most robust, ceramic is less visible, self-ligating avoids elastic ties and lingual is hidden. The right one depends on your case.
Do ceramic braces work as well as metal braces?
Yes, when the case is suitable. Both move teeth with a wire. Ceramic brackets are a little larger and need care to avoid stained ties.
Are self-ligating braces faster?
Treatment time depends mainly on the case, not just the bracket. Self-ligating braces can make adjustment visits quicker and cleaning easier.
Do lingual braces affect speech?
At first, yes. Most people need some time for the tongue to adjust. Your orthodontist will explain what to expect before you decide.
What are “teeth clips” or “kambi”?
These are everyday words many people use for braces. They usually mean fixed metal or ceramic braces with brackets and a wire.
Can adults choose any type of braces?
Most adults can choose metal, ceramic or self-ligating braces, or clear aligners. Gum health and existing dental work are checked first.
Do ceramic braces stain?
The ceramic brackets resist stains, but clear elastic ties can discolour with strongly coloured food and drinks. Ties are replaced at regular visits.
Which braces are easiest to clean?
Self-ligating braces have fewer ties, which can make cleaning easier. With any braces, careful brushing and flossing are essential.
Can I switch from braces to aligners later?
Sometimes. Your orthodontist decides based on how treatment is progressing and what movement is still needed.
How much do the different types of braces cost?
Metal braces are usually the most affordable and lingual braces the most expensive. Current approximate ranges are in our teeth braces price guide.
