Implant-supported vs regular dentures: the short answer
Implant-supported dentures clip onto dental implants, so they don’t slip when you eat or speak; regular dentures rest on the gums and are held only by suction and fit. Regular dentures cost less and need no surgery, but can loosen over time as the jawbone shrinks. Implant-supported dentures need implants and a short surgery, but stay firmly in place and help preserve the bone around the implants.
| Regular dentures | Implant-supported dentures (overdentures) | Fixed full-arch implant teeth | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Held by | Suction and fit on the gums | Clips onto implants | Screwed onto implants |
| Removable by you | Yes | Yes | No, fixed |
| Surgery | No | Yes, implant placement | Yes, implant placement |
| Grip when chewing | Can slip | Much firmer | Like natural teeth |
| Bone around implants | Not protected | Helps preserve it | Helps preserve it |
| Cost | Lowest | Middle | Highest |
If your dentures feel loose or sore, implant support is usually the biggest improvement in comfort and chewing. This guide compares the options so you can discuss them with your dentist; our dentures in Hyderabad page covers all denture types.
What are implant-supported dentures?
An implant-supported denture, also called an overdenture, is a removable denture that snaps onto attachments on dental implants. You take it out to clean it, but it locks in place while you wear it. It is mostly used for the lower jaw, where regular dentures are the hardest to keep steady.
Why do regular dentures become loose?
When teeth are lost, the jawbone that held them slowly shrinks. Dentures are made to fit the gums and bone at a point in time, so as the bone changes, they fit less well. Relining or remaking dentures restores the fit for a while.
What are flexible dentures?
Flexible or soft dentures are made of a softer material than regular hard dentures, which can feel more comfortable on tender gums. They are still held by the gums, not by implants, so they don’t solve looseness caused by bone loss.
How many implants does an implant-supported denture need?
The number of implants depends on your jawbone, your bite, which jaw is treated and whether you want a removable or a fixed option. A CBCT scan shows how much bone is available, and your dentist recommends the number of implants for your case. If bone is thin, see our guide to dental bone grafting before implants.
Overdenture or fixed teeth: which should I choose?
An overdenture is removable and usually needs fewer implants; fixed full-arch teeth stay in all the time and feel closer to natural teeth. Fixed options such as All-on-4 are explained in our full mouth dental implants guide.
Can I use my existing denture with implants?
Sometimes. In some cases a well-fitting existing denture can be adapted to clip onto new implants. Your dentist checks the fit and condition of your denture first.
How do I care for implant-supported dentures?
Remove and clean the denture daily, clean around the implant attachments with a soft brush, and keep regular check-ups. The clips wear slowly and are replaced when they lose their grip.

Frequently asked questions
Are implant-supported dentures better than regular dentures?
For grip and chewing, usually yes. They clip onto implants and don’t slip. Regular dentures cost less and need no surgery, so the right choice depends on your needs and health.
How many implants do I need for a denture?
It depends on your bone, your bite and whether the denture is removable or fixed. Your dentist recommends the number of implants after a CBCT scan.
Can I remove an implant-supported denture?
Yes, an overdenture is removable for cleaning. Fixed full-arch implant teeth are not removable by the patient.
Why do my dentures keep getting loose?
The jawbone shrinks after teeth are lost, so dentures gradually fit less well. Relining helps for a while; implants give lasting grip.
Are flexible dentures the same as implant dentures?
No. Flexible dentures are softer and can be more comfortable, but they rest on the gums. Implant dentures are held by implants.
Is implant surgery painful for older patients?
Implant placement is done under local anaesthesia, and most patients manage with simple pain relief afterwards. Your general health is checked first.
Can I get implant dentures if I have little bone?
Often, yes. Bone grafting or a different implant plan may be used. A CBCT scan shows what is possible.
Can my old denture be fixed onto implants?
Sometimes, if it fits well and is in good condition. Otherwise a new denture is made to clip onto the implants.
How long do the clips last?
The attachments wear slowly with daily use and are replaced when the denture starts to feel loose.
How much do implant-supported dentures cost?
The cost depends on the number of implants, the attachments and whether the teeth are removable or fixed. You receive a written estimate after the consultation and scan.
