Composite vs porcelain veneers: the short answer
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells made in a lab and bonded to the front of your teeth; composite veneers are tooth-coloured resin shaped directly on the tooth in the chair. In Hyderabad, “laminates” and “veneers” mean the same treatment. Choose porcelain (ceramic laminate) veneers for a long-lasting smile makeover of several front teeth; choose composite veneers for small repairs, a trial of a new shape, or when you want to keep tooth preparation to a minimum.
| Porcelain (ceramic laminate) veneers | Composite veneers | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Ceramic, made in a dental lab | Tooth-coloured resin |
| How it’s made | Designed and milled or 3D printed, then bonded | Built up and shaped on the tooth |
| Visits | Usually 2 | Usually 1 |
| Tooth preparation | A thin layer of enamel is reshaped | Little or none in many cases |
| Stain resistance | High | Lower; can pick up tea and coffee stains |
| Repair | Usually replaced if chipped | Can often be repaired in the chair |
| Best for | Full smile makeover, discoloured or uneven front teeth | Small chips, gaps, trial shapes |
Porcelain gives the most natural, stain-resistant result; composite is quicker and needs less tooth reduction. This guide compares both so you can discuss the right choice for your veneers treatment in Hyderabad with your dentist.
Are laminates and veneers the same thing?
Yes. “Laminate” is the term many people in India use for a veneer. A ceramic laminate veneer and a porcelain veneer are the same treatment: a thin shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Some patients also call it “instant orthodontics”, because veneers can make slightly crooked or spaced teeth look straight without braces.
What problems can veneers fix?
Veneers change the colour, shape and size of front teeth. They are commonly used for:
- Discoloured teeth that don’t respond to whitening
- Chipped, worn or uneven edges
- Small gaps between teeth
- Slightly crooked or overlapping teeth
- Teeth that look too short or too small
Veneers do not fix a bad bite or large movements of teeth. If teeth are badly crooked, braces or aligners may be the better first step.
How are porcelain veneers made at Dr. Gowds Dental Hospitals?
Porcelain veneers take two clinical visits. At the first visit the teeth are prepared, a precise impression or digital scan is taken, and temporary acrylic veneers are placed. The final ceramic laminates are then designed and made in the hospital’s in-house laboratory using CAD/CAM milling or 3D printing. At the second visit they are bonded permanently to the teeth. Learn more about the technology in our guide to CAD/CAM dental restorations.
How are composite veneers placed?
Composite veneers are usually done in one visit. The dentist cleans and lightly roughens the tooth, then adds tooth-coloured resin in layers, shapes it, hardens it with a light and polishes it. Because nothing is sent to a lab, small changes can be made on the spot.
Composite vs porcelain veneers: which is more durable?
Porcelain veneers are generally more durable and keep their colour better. Ceramic is hard and does not absorb stains. Composite resin is softer, so it can wear, chip or stain over time and may need polishing or touch-ups.
Which looks more natural?
Porcelain usually looks more natural, because ceramic reflects light much like enamel. Well-made composite can also look very good, especially on one or two teeth. For a full smile makeover across six to ten front teeth, most patients choose porcelain for a consistent shade and shape.
Do veneers damage your natural teeth?
Porcelain veneers need a thin layer of enamel to be reshaped so the veneer sits flush, and this step can’t be undone. Composite veneers often need little or no reshaping. This is why your dentist checks your gums, bite and enamel first, and why veneers are planned carefully rather than done in a hurry. Healthy gums are needed before any veneer work; see our gum disease treatment page.
How much do veneers cost in Hyderabad?
The cost depends on the material, the number of teeth and the work needed before the veneers. Porcelain veneers usually cost more per tooth than composite veneers because of the lab work and materials. You receive a written estimate after the consultation. Frequently asked questions
Are laminates and veneers the same?
Yes. “Laminate” is the common Indian term for a veneer. Ceramic laminates and porcelain veneers are the same treatment: thin shells bonded to the front of the teeth to change their colour, shape or size.
Which is better, composite or porcelain veneers?
Neither is better for everyone. Porcelain is more durable, resists stains and looks more natural across many teeth. Composite is quicker, often needs less tooth reshaping and is easier to repair. Your dentist recommends one after checking your teeth.
How many visits do porcelain veneers need?
Usually two. The first visit covers tooth preparation, a scan or impression and temporary veneers. The final ceramic laminates are made in the lab and bonded at the second visit.
Can composite veneers be done in one day?
In most cases, yes. Composite is built up directly on the tooth, shaped and polished in a single sitting, because no laboratory work is involved.
Do veneers stain?
Porcelain veneers resist stains very well. Composite veneers can absorb colour from tea, coffee and smoking over time, so they may need polishing or touch-ups.
Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
Veneers can make slightly crooked or overlapping teeth look straight. They do not move teeth or correct the bite. For larger problems, braces or aligners are usually needed first.
Is getting veneers painful?
Preparation for porcelain veneers is done under local anaesthesia, so most patients feel little discomfort. Composite veneers often need no anaesthesia at all. Mild sensitivity for a few days can happen.
Can I whiten veneers later?
No. Whitening does not change the colour of porcelain or composite. If you want whiter teeth, whiten your natural teeth before the veneer shade is chosen.
Are veneers permanent?
Porcelain veneers are considered permanent because the enamel under them has been reshaped, so the teeth will always need a veneer or crown.
Who should not get veneers?
People with untreated gum disease, active decay, very little enamel or a heavy grinding habit may need other treatment first. Your dentist checks these at the consultation.
